Advent at St. John
Advent starts early this year! As we move into these four weeks of preparation for Christmas we want to help you make the most of it!
What is Advent? Pope Benedict once described Advent as the great season of hope:
“Advent is par excellence the season of hope in which believers in Christ are invited to remain in watchful and active waiting, nourished by prayer and by the effective commitment to love. May the approaching Nativity of Christ fill the hearts of all Christians with joy, serenity and peace!”
So what are we hoping for? Maybe it’s joy. For some it may be serenity. For others it may be peace. Jesus offers all of these gifts to us. The deep and sincere longings of every human heart find their fulfillment in Jesus. And in Advent we remember that God has not forgotten us. The One who placed those deep longings in our hearts will also satisfy them. St. Therese of Lisieux once said “the good God never gives desires that He cannot fulfill.”
Hope! Advent is a time to step out in hope. It’s a season to rekindle our faith that just as the Lord once entered a tired and weary world, burdened by sin, so he comes to us now.
